Choose a species for a specific product

Start with tilapia if you want to learn feeding and reproduction. Change species when you have a clear use for the output and can meet its care requirements. A different fish is not automatically a better source of profit.

Names and special effects below come from current item descriptions; the diet and breeding comparison is also supported by community references. Exact growth time, feed consumption, output and sale value remain untested here.

Compare the three tilapia strains

Ordinary tilapia is described as a fast-growing, broadly feeding farm fish. Keep suitable breeding adults before harvesting surplus. Gutter Tilapia is described as tolerating dirty water and removing heavy-metal and chemical contaminants, at the cost of slower growth and less meat for its feed.

Graft Tilapia is a medical-material route: the description mentions sterilized skin and unfertilized roe for wounds, with clean-water needs and less meat. Do not assume that a medical product can be processed by the same action as ordinary fish meat; check the item and tool instructions.

Separate eel meat from electric-eel charging

Ordinary eels are described as a source of luxury fillets. Electric eels are described as charging the tank battery and adjacent batteries each night from adolescence, with output increasing as they grow. Neither is described as breeding in captivity.

Community care notes classify both as carnivores. Check the food accepted by the current fish; do not assume tilapia pellets will support them. Keep replacement-stock costs and tank power demand in mind before treating an electric eel as spare energy.

Read sturgeon health before collecting roe

Sturgeon is described as a caviar fish that does not breed in captivity. The official Aquafarmer announcement confirms Surgery Tools for caviar; the item description distinguishes collecting eggs from a living fish and collecting them at slaughter.

Community notes warn that live harvesting can cost health. Read the current health, roe and tool instructions before repeating the action. No fixed jar count, safe repeat interval or guaranteed sale price has been tested here.

Check the fish and the tank before buying

Confirm available tank space, water quality, usable water, power and compatible feed before introducing another species. Leave capacity for growth and offspring, not just the fish's current size.

Keep fertilized roe, ordinary roe and fry distinct. The Wiki uses same-species roe illustrations where a separate fertilized image is unavailable; identify fertilization by the name and tooltip. Use the farming guide for setup and the aquaculture collection for equipment and materials.
